iThemba Labs, Faure, Western Cape iThemba Labs, Gauteng

The iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences is a group of multi-disciplinary research laboratories administered by the National Research Foundation. Based at two sites in the Western Cape and Gauteng, these provide facilities for:

  • Basic and applied research using particle beams
  • Particle radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer
  • The supply of accelerator-produced radioactive
    isotopes for nuclear medicine and research

iThemba LABS and Necsa work together for the advancement of Nuclear Sciences in South Africa



The National Research Foundation’s iThemba LABS and the South Africa Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) have reached a consensus to enter into a research consortium agreement to give effect to the development and implementation of a joint strategic research framework in nuclear sciences.
